Online Therapy & Counselling Across the UK

Your space to be heard

About me

There was a time in my life when everything felt like too much for me to carry.

Being told I was strong didn’t help, and neither did being pitied. What helped most was having someone make the time and space to simply be alongside me, so I didn’t have to face it all by myself.

I retrained as a therapist because I wanted to become that person for someone else.

That experience has shaped the therapist I am today. I don’t believe therapy should feel like another place where you need to be strong, perform, explain yourself or hold it all together.

Therapy with Elizabeth Paterson

Outside of work, I spend a lot of my time outdoors gardening (okay, okay, mostly sitting in the garden!).

I love being in nature, listening to the sounds around me and noticing what’s happening out there today.

I find it deeply restorative and a good way to keep perspective.

I enjoy thinking about how I can work with nature rather than against it. The seasons change, wildlife has its own ideas, and the garden is never quite the same from one day to the next. I get a lot of joy from growing fresh food, sharing the garden with all its different inhabitants and finding ways to encourage biodiversity.

My adorably fluffy ragdoll cat, Husky, joins me and keeps a close supervision on it all.

A little about my experience

I gained my BACP accreditation a few years after setting up my own private practice, which I established in 2019.

Qualifications matter, but I don’t believe they make someone a good therapist on their own. I continue to invest in regular professional development because the more I understand about trauma, neurodivergence, relationships and human experience, the better I can support the people who trust me with their stories.

I also believe that looking after myself is an important part of being an effective therapist.

Making time for reflection, rest, creativity and the things that bring me joy helps me stay grounded and present, so I can bring warmth, attention and compassion to my work.
